How to Navigate an Unexpected Pregnancy with Your Significant Other

A few weeks ago, we discussed what to do when you discover that you’re pregnant from a one-night stand. However, even women in long-term relationships can feel scared and conflicted about an unexpected pregnancy! Maybe you and your partner discussed having kids eventually but now isn’t the right time. Perhaps you two decided that you don’t want kids at all. Whatever the case may be, a decision has to be made and it could mean major changes for your relationship.

Take a deep breath. Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center is here to help! Today, we’re walking you through how to tell your significant other about an unexpected pregnancy.

Receive an Ultrasound

It’s best to be 100% sure you’re pregnant before saying anything. Even if you’ve already taken an at-home pregnancy test, consider booking a free ultrasound at HPRC! This will provide you with important information about your pregnancy:

  • Gestational Age. Your gestational age refers to how far along you are in your pregnancy.

  • Viability. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. Your ultrasound can confirm whether you’re likely to carry to term or miscarry.

  • Placement. In rare cases, the pregnancy can form outside of the uterus. This is known as ectopic pregnancy and it is fatal to the fetus and life-threatening to the mother. As soon as an ectopic pregnancy is discovered, it requires immediate treatment. The medical treatment of an ectopic pregnancy is NOT considered an abortion and is legal in the state of Alabama.

An ultrasound is an important first step and will inform your pregnancy options going forward!

Be Emotionally Prepared

While you can’t predict your partner’s reaction, try to be prepared for big feelings and not take anything too personally. He’s hearing this life-changing news for the first time in front of you and may need to let out his feelings before he can process them. Give him space to go for a drive or take a walk, if he needs it. You’ll want him to have a clear head as you two start to explore your unplanned pregnancy options

If you’re concerned that your partner may react violently to the news, we urge you to reach out for help immediately. Any form of domestic abuse is completely unacceptable. If your partner has made threats or acted on them, it’s crucial to get out of the relationship as soon as possible!

Explore Your Options Together

Sometimes, an unexpected pregnancy can put a strain on a relationship. Suddenly, you’ve got big decisions to make with a deadline looming. Perhaps you’re afraid that the relationship will change in ways you’re not ready for. Maybe you’re worried it will fall apart completely.
